Feeling disillusioned with town squares, we idled down Route 68 with our eyes open for strange and unexpected detours. We did a double-take after passing a pile of junk on the side of the road and turned around to explore it. Quickly, we realized we’d stumbled upon the Classical Gas Museum - an incredible roadside collection of vintage gas station memorabilia.

Just as random as it sounds, Johnnie Meier has spent his retirement building an extraordinary collection of vintage gas pumps, oil cans, uniforms, neon signs, and other pieces from the mid-1900s. He shared his deep passion for the intention and design that went into making art deco gas stations in the 50’s (an effort that was instigated by gas companies so that communities would accept the “dirty” and “smelly” businesses into their neighborhoods) and begrudged todays “robotic” pumps. We couldn’t help but agree that their vintage designs were gorgeous, and we both got pretty excited about gas station history for a hot minute.
